Cape Town – Manenberg’s grandmother’s boyfriend, Magdalene Isaacs, has been sentenced to just 14 years in prison despite confessing to brutally stabbing the old woman to death.

Trevor “Toyer ‘Michaels, 50, appeared in Wynberg Regional Court yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to the murder of the 63-year-old woman, who was found dead at her home on Irvine Street on February 10.

In a confession read by his lawyer in court, Michaels admitted that he was upset with his girlfriend after she went on a trip with a friend, and when he got home that day, Magdalene left him and told him he needed space.

“I was left blank and went to the kitchen to get a knife and walked over to the deceased and stabbed her in the neck and stomach,” the lawyer read.

“The deceased then walked into the room and I followed her and stabbed her in the neck again.

“He collapsed between the bed and the closet and then I sat on the bed for a few minutes and contemplated suicide.”

The lawyer said Michaels tried to hang himself, but the chair he was using broke, so he wrote a letter confessing to the murder and fled the scene.

He asked the court to have mercy on Michaels as he had pleaded guilty and had cooperated with the investigation.

But the State Prosecutor’s Office requested the prescribed minimum penalty of 15 years in prison due to the seriousness of the crime.

At his trial, the magistrate said that he took into account the state of mind of the accused, his age and his confession.

“I have analyzed his personal circumstances and this incident occurred in circumstances where I was not happy that the deceased was dating someone else.

“The court is not there to take revenge on behalf of the community. The court, in its determination, must consider aggravating circumstances and extenuating circumstances.

“His personal circumstances show that he acted on the spur of the moment and that he is not a young person.

“I have decided to deviate from the minimum sentence and you will be sentenced to 14 years in prison.”

Outside of court, Magdalene’s daughter Gail, 32, said the family was unhappy with the sentence.

“We are not happy, but what can we do? I said from the beginning that we leave it in God’s hands, ”he said.
