How SA Rugby’s all-new Springbok draft pick will work

Two groups of 25 will be selected from an expanded team of 60 players in an old-fashioned ‘schoolyard pick’ draft that takes place next week.

SA Rugby announced on Wednesday its plans to rekindle an exciting four-month home season, which will begin with a Vodacom Super Fan day involving all four Super Rugby teams next Saturday, followed by a ‘Springbok Showdown’.

The ‘showdown’ will see a Springbok Green team take on a Springbok Gold team in Newlands, with Springbok assistants Mzwandile Stick and Deon Davids in charge of both sides.

Rugby manager Rassie Erasmus and Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber will serve as commissioners for the team.

The match will be similar to New Zealand Rugby’s recent North vs South clash, but the main difference will be that players will not be selected based on geography.

The selection process will take the form of a draft pick from an expanded team of 60 players with the heads of the Green and Gold teams taking alternate turns on an old-fashioned ‘schoolyard pick’ to assemble their teams of 25. players each.

The drama will unfold live on SuperSport, and the expanded team will be announced live on Saturday before the crucial draft pick next week.
