JOHANNESBURG – Having resigned as Clicks’ non-executive director, Nonkululeko Gobodo said she has been deeply affected by a racist advertisement posted on the retailer’s website.

Gobodo withdrew from the board on Monday over the ad labeling black hair as dry, frizzy and damaged.

Speaking on behalf of the company last week, Godobo revealed that he had raised a red flag with management a few months ago for the way the company was communicating with black customers.

However, he said that clicks alone should not fall into the ad trap, as the retailer simply published the content that TRESemmé had created.

Gobodo said he will be leaving the retailer because the racist incident goes against the values of another initiative he is working on that focuses on addressing racism and empowering women.

“What happened last week is very sad. It affected me personally as a black woman. I felt disrespected by that ad and it’s something that I can’t deny how I felt around the ad. The ad affected me deeply as a black woman. “
