The state capture investigation heard Tuesday that Eskom’s top management allegedly had ties to the Gupta family accused of corruption, and that businessman Salim Essa, also linked to the family, allegedly influenced some of the decisions made at the power company. .
These accusations were made by former Eskom company secretary Suzanne Daniels during her testimony in the investigation.
Lead evidence advocate Pule Seleka questioned Daniels about a meeting between her, Duduzane Zuma [son of former president Jacob Zuma], Essa and Ajay Gupta.

Meeting Essa
“I first met Mr. Essa in March 2015. He called me at Melrose Arch by Matshela Koko [ex-Eskom acting CEO]. We crossed the street to an office building. I had to hand over my phone to reception. So this gentleman comes in and introduces himself as Salim Essa and says he’s the advisor to [former public enterprises] Minister [Lynne] Brown.
“He asked me what we have to do if we want to suspend people. He proceeded to tell me that in the next few days, the four executives Consolation ministers [former Eskom CEO], Dan Marokane [former Eskom CCO], Tsholofelo Molefe [former Eskom finance director] and Matshela Koko would be suspended from Eskom. “
Gupta’s influence
“There was a meeting where they called Minister Lynne Brown. Board members complained that their bank accounts were being investigated and that they were declared politically exposed.
“The next day one of the board members called and said she was angry that Nedbank was threatening to freeze her accounts. She told me, ‘If these people think I’m going to go down alone, they have another thought on the way. They all know. This board is a Gupta board. ‘
