Durban – A multi-disciplinary raid comprising different Hawks units is underway in various parts of Durban to recover around R700 million stolen from Durban’s water and sanitation unit through bid fraud and corruption.
Eighteen properties belonging to unit employees at different levels and service providers were selected.
On Tuesday morning, around 7 a.m., at least six vehicles, including a Porsche Cayenne GTS, a Range Rover and a BMW, among others, were removed from the property of a service provider on Kenyon Howden Road, Montclair. .
A source close to the investigation said that the National Clean Audit Task Force, made up of the National Prosecutor’s Office, SAPS Asset Confiscation Unit and NPA, Digital Forensic Services, Crime Scene Management, the National Intervention Unit and Financial Intelligence. The center was tasked with recovering the loot and junior and senior staff were flagged as suspects.
“Junior staff are living the life of billionaires and this has been going on for over 10 years with no action being taken to stop the rot. All these stakeholders in this operation have been used to unravel the seriousness of the crimes committed by a very well orchestrated criminal company that works within the Water and Sanitation Unit of the Ethekweni municipality. Investigations continue, ”said the source.
The properties under attack are in Woodlands, Morningside, Chatsworth, Merebank and Montclair.
“This is on top of the raid that was reported in July to recover around R200 million. These huge people would simply process millions of rand fraudulently. In some cases, no work was done and false statements were made on recovered invoices. In some there were no authorized signatures according to the approval requirement and the payments were approved without any control and balance ”, said the source.
In July, the Daily News reported that the Hawks, along with the Asset Forfeiture Unit, pounced on the homes of several municipal officials believed to be involved in corruption worth an estimated 200 million rand.
