- Eighteen properties linked to officials allegedly involved in fraud in water and sanitation tenders in the eThekwini metro were raided.
- They are allegedly involved in a bidding fraud worth R700 million, a number that soared from R200 million.
- Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said there was no resistance from those on the properties.
eThekwini Metro will initiate disciplinary proceedings following morning raids by the Hawks against officials of the water and sanitation unit that involved R700 million in alleged fraud.
“We have our internal investigations unit working with the Hawks in their execution. At this time, we are awaiting a report from them so that we can start internal processes again with the suspected employees,” said Acting City Manager Sipho Cele.
He spoke after the Hawks raided the homes of several junior employees who allegedly lived high-end lifestyles thanks to dire income streams.

Hawks spokesman Brig. Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that 18 “properties of interest” were raided.
He said different sections under the Hawks tried to recover around R700 million stolen from the water and sanitation unit through alleged bid rigging and corruption.
“The amount stolen in this matter has increased from R200 million to R700 million.”
Mulaudzi said the reports that the luxury vehicles were seized were false.
“That is not true. There were no seized vehicles.”
He said authorities encountered no resistance during the raids.
“So far, we have not received any resistance or encountered any problems. I am not sure when we will finish. We have made sure that all aspects [of the raids] that was required of us was covered. “
