The man accused of murdering actress Thandeka Mdeliswa appeared in Evander Magistrates Court on Monday, where the matter was postponed to the end of this month.

Thandeka, who starred in several television productions, including iKani, eKasi: Our stories and the movie Father’s love, she was shot in Evander, Mpumalanga, on September 3 in what her family described as “another incident of violence against women.”

She was transferred to a Pretoria hospital where she later died.

Three men were arrested by police last week in connection with the murder, but only one suspect appeared in court on Monday, where the matter was postponed to next week for a formal request for bail.

“Siyabonga Mbatha (25) appeared in Evander’s court of first instance on Monday charged with murder. The matter was postponed until September 21, 2020 for the formal application of the bond, ”NPA regional spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa told SowetanLIVE’s sister publication TshisaLIVE.

He explained that the charges against the other two suspects had been dropped because they could not be related to the murder.

“Investigations are ongoing,” he added.

According to the police, Thandeka was shot after he went to investigate a dispute between his brother and two men. As he approached the scene, one of the men allegedly snatched a firearm from his friend and shot him.

Two men fled the scene and police and medical personnel were immediately summoned.
