JOHANNESBURG – Mbali Ntuli of the Democratic Alliance (DA) issued a poignant internal memorandum to party delegates ahead of the opposition’s official elective conference next month.

Eyewitness news is in possession of a copy of the memorandum, which calls on the party to foster a culture of insiders and outsiders and to close the debate.

Ntuli plans to compete for the DA leadership next month, facing interim leader John Steenhuisen.

In the memo with Tuesday’s date, Ntuli outlined her concerns about the festival’s culture. She referred to a dedicated activist base that was frustrated that her work was threatened by what she called “silly tweets.”

Ntuli also pointed to the growing cliques within the party, a culture of insiders who managed to set the organization’s agenda and norms, and anyone who disagreed was painted as a rebel or troublemaker.

In the run-up to the party’s recent political conference, another senior black party member resigned, publicly denouncing the party for similar reasons and claiming a concerted effort to purge black leaders.

At the time, the district attorney strongly denied that there was such a purge.
