Sergio Reguilón ‘close’ to Manchester United

Manchester United and Real Madrid have been in constant talks for a transfer involving Sergio Reguilon, and a deal is now said to be “close”.

Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilón is on his way to stardom. Last season, Reguilón was a key player for Sevilla, as Julen Lopetegui’s team won the Europa League and finished fourth in La Liga to secure Champions League football next season.

While Reguilon could still be loaned out to Sevilla for the 2020-2021 season, Manchester United has long seemed the most logical landing spot for him. They have been far from the only impressive suitor in Europe or even the Premier League, but United have shown interest and are in dire need of Reguilon.

According to a report by Edu Pidal from Onda Cero, Sergio Reguilón is now “close” to completing a transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United.

Previously, The Guardian reported that Real and United still had some disagreements. The Red Devils were reportedly unwilling to meet Real’s € 30 million asking price, which seemed reasonable for a young left-back coming off a great season. But secondly, United was also not interested in agreeing to a buyback clause.

Real Madrid have been asking Manchester United for a buyback clause

United’s hesitancy to allow Real Madrid to take Reguilon back at a later date is not surprising, and most big clubs don’t accept buyback clauses. When they hire someone they see as their incumbent for years to come, they want to be around with no strings attached.

But the Whites also understandably wanted a trade to have Reguilon back if a spot opened up behind Ferland Mendy on the left back. Reguilón himself still dreams of being a key player at the Santiago Bernabéu, and is much loved by the fans.

At Manchester United, Reguilon should become the undisputed starter and a great asset in his attack as an exciting left-back who can carry the ball and throw great crosses. He’s not the most consistent defender, but he’s working hard and he’s improving.

If a deal is reached between both powerful clubs heading into Champions League football in 2020-2021, then all eyes will be on both the potential buyback clause and the overall fee. If Achraf Hakimi went for 40 million euros, Reguion for 30 million euros is a reasonable asking price.
