A Durban man who came to the attention of police after allegedly reckless driving was allegedly found with a hand grenade, shotgun and Mandrax in his car.

Officers from the national law enforcement unit were on busy Engelbrecht Road on Friday when they saw a reckless vehicle driving on the road, police spokesman Nqobile Gwala said Monday.

“The vehicle was stopped and the suspect tried to flee the scene,” Gwala alleged. “The police chased him and the suspect resisted arrest, but was placed under arrest. The suspect’s vehicle was searched. A shotgun, a hand grenade and 660 Mandrax tablets worth R33,000 were found inside the vehicle.” .

She alleged that two pistols containing 33 different rounds of ammunition were also found in the suspect.

“Investigations revealed that one of the pistols was stolen during a house robbery in Wentworth in February,” he further alleged.

It said the 32-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives, possession of drugs, reckless and negligent driving and resisting arrest.

He appeared before the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday and was placed in pre-trial detention until September 18 to request a formal bond.
