South Africa’s National Energy Regulator (Nersa) has agreed with the ministerial determination for the acquisition of 11,813MW of generation infrastructure under the 2019 Integrated Resources Plan (IRP2019), Eskom announced in a statement.
“Eskom is pleased to note that the South African National Energy Regulator (Nersa) has agreed to the ministerial determination for the acquisition of 11,813MW of electricity generation infrastructure issued by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy in February 2020 “Eskom said.
“This is part of the energy infrastructure that will be acquired under the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP2019) during the years until 2030.”
Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter said this additional power was an important step in ending South Africa’s cargo shedding.
“Given current supply constraints, this additional generation capacity is urgently required and will be an important contribution to end load shedding and ensure the country’s energy security,” he said.
The power company said it looked forward to working with the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Office of IPP to bring additional capacity to the grid as quickly as possible.
It also highlighted its progress in acquiring 2,000MW of emergency power, which it said will begin connecting to the national grid in December 2021.
“While the emergency acquisition of 2,000MW is a step in the right direction, Eskom wishes to emphasize the immediate need to urgently accelerate the acquisition of at least 3,000MW of additional generation capacity to help alleviate supply constraints facing the country currently, ”Eskom said.
Eskom said that acquiring an additional 5,000 MW of additional generating capacity is critical to keeping the lights on and helping rebuild the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Adding additional generation capacity will also help relieve pressure on Eskom and create space for the maintenance of its old power plants, while also driving a growing economy.”
