Starting Monday (September 14), applicants for social grants will be able to apply for certain social grants online, says the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
At this stage, the pilot project will cover Child support, Old peopleand Foster son grants and Sassa said that other grants will also be added to the portal after a review process.
“This should be a relief for grant applicants as it will save them the inconvenience of queuing at Sassa’s offices to apply for their grants,” the agency said.
“The added advantage is that the convenience of online applications eliminates the risk of becoming infected with the Covid-19 virus because it will not be necessary to meet in public places to apply.”
“This remote self-service will be possible on both a computer and a mobile phone. The response time is 10 days, provided that the applicant provides all the stipulated documents, such as the identity documents of the applicant and his / her spouse, as well as bank details, among others ”.
Sassa said that users will be able to access the following features online:
- Grant applications for foster child grants, senior grants, and child support grants;
- Online submission of the required supporting documentation linked to the application;
- Change of circumstances (payment method, bank details, address);
- Request status.
To access this service, applicants must have an email address to register and be able to log in for more services. Feedback to applicants will be sent via SMS notification to applicants who do not have an email address and an email response will be sent to applicants who choose to be contacted by email.
A receipt will be generated when the request is completed.
The system test will take place from September 14, 2020 to September 25, 2020. It is important to note that the supporting documents to be attached must be certified. These documents must be certified by a commissioner of oaths, ”said Sassa.
Sassa said applications can be submitted on his secure website here. The website was not online at the time of this writing.
