Mattia Binotto has made a damning assessment of Ferrari’s SF1000, saying that even small updates “won’t make a difference.”
Although Ferrari was back in the points at the Tuscan Grand Prix, with both cars within the top ten, it could be argued that it was due to only 12 cars finishing rather than a sign of improving pace.
Charles Leclerc was eighth in Ferrari’s 1000th grand prix with Sebastian Vettel P10 having managed to fend off George Russell’s Williams.
Sunday’s result means the Scuderia remains sixth in the championship with 66 points, 17 behind Renault.
“It is a difficult project,” Binotto conceded to Sky Italia.
“We lose rhythm after a few laps, there is no explanation.
“We are disappointed, we need a step back to review everything at the base.
“Small changes will not make a difference.”
Leclerc was Ferrari’s fastest driver at the Mugello circuit, fifth in qualifying.
However, on race day he didn’t have the speed to hold that position.
. @Carlos_Leclerc : “We are too slow … it is very difficult at the moment. You make a good start, you put yourself in the best possible position but then you don’t have the rhythm to maintain those positions. And when I want to fight as much as I can, I just can’t.”

He added: “It’s very tough at the moment, but we have to keep our heads up, stay motivated.
“That is very important in these difficult times.
“Hopefully we see better times coming.”

Binotto acknowledged that his driver has every right to be disappointed, but that he did not see a light at the end of the tunnel, at least not for this season.
“Leclerc is right, we are disappointed,” he said. “We had no race pace. After a few laps we lose rhythm, the result is the consequence.
“There is no explanation, we suffered a marked deterioration of the tires.
“Some small updates will already be there from the next race, but they will not make a difference.
“We need a step back to reset, we also work hard in the factory to correct the base of the package, also for 2021. We cannot count on small changes.
He added: “Today the drivers did their part, Leclerc was great in qualifying and in the race they gave their best, but they had problems. We all have to get out of this together. “
