  • The Hawks have arrested a money thief in transit.
  • The 31-year-old suspect is linked to a robbery in Rustenburg in July last year.
  • He will appear in court Monday and the Hawks hope to make more arrests.

A cash in transit thief, who was also allegedly linked to a theft of cash in transit in Rustenburg in July 2019, was eventually arrested, the Hawks said Sunday.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested Friday at Hillbrow, Hawks spokesman Capt.Tlangelani Rikhotso said.

Rikhotso said a multi-front operation led by the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes Unit in Rustenburg and assisted by members of the National Crime Intelligence, the Gauteng Special Law Enforcement Unit, the Police Department Metropolitan Johannesburg, the CIT National Task Force and the Johannesburg Flying Team, led to the apprehension of “a highly wanted suspect.”

Rikhotso said that in the 2019 robbery, heavily armed suspects allegedly used two vehicles to force an armored vehicle to stop at the intersections of Fatima Bayat and Bosch streets in Rustenburg.

“They then used explosives to open the safes of the armored car and took an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect is expected to appear in Rustenburg Magistrates Court on Monday and further arrests cannot be ruled out.”
