DA condemns Ramaphosa’s decision to remove statues honoring colonial figures

CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Sunday condemned President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to remove statues honoring colonial and apartheid figures from public spaces.
The party intends to raise the issue with the chairman of Parliament’s portfolio committee on sports, arts and culture.
He wants the task force to be set up to investigate the movement that will be presented to MPs.
Veronica van Dyke from the District Attorney said: “This ANC government measure is fundamentally aimed at creating sanitized public spaces that reflect a government-approved story that honors government-approved heroes. Removing statues that are not part of this narrative allows the ANC to control how these statues are presented in historical narratives for future generations. “
