JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Nursing Organization of South Africa has written an open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa to address what it calls the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on nurses.

Frontline workers say they need pay raises and a risk allowance.
Denosa Chairman Simon Hlungwani says that nurses are unmotivated as they also have to work longer hours and are at risk of being infected with COVID-19.
“The president (Ramaphosa) should not take things as usual when nurses are dying from COVID-19. We are demanding that the president intervene. We need our rightful raise.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Health recorded 49 new deaths from COVID-19 in South Africa, bringing the total number of deaths to 15,427.
The recovery rate remains at 89.9%.
Most of the new deaths come from the Western Cape and Gauteng.
More than 1,800 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported.
