The Sunday Times has given more space in the column to the charming, unpredictable and unreliable Duncan Castles today, who claims that PSG’s Kylian Mbappé will be leaving the club next summer and would like to play for Liverpool or Manchester United.
Mbappé is the highest valued player in the world, with a market price of 180 million euros (166 million pounds) according to Transfermarkt.
The 21-year-old, currently suffering from COVID-19, scored an incredible 30 goals and recorded 19 assists in 37 games for PSG last season.
He has also scored 14 goals in 35 games for France.
The idea that the Frenchman could join United seems ridiculous, but as always, Castles has woven a good story that is almost compelling in his logic.
“Kylian Mbappé has informed Paris Saint-Germain that he intends to leave at the end of this season to continue his career elsewhere,” says Castles.
The 21-year-old French international, a vocal admirer of Liverpool’s game under Jürgen Klopp, is believed to have aimed to move on to La Liga or the Premier League.
‘The PSG does not want to lose [Mbappe] and they have made multiple offers of substantially improved financial conditions.
“Mbappé, however, has made it clear that his plan is to play one more season in Paris, which gives manager Leonardo one last summer window to recoup the investment of the club’s transfer fee.”
So far, it seems plausible, and quite a first for the intrepid reporter. Noting that Real Madrid and Barcelona could be interested in securing the Frenchman’s services, Castles continues:
Liverpool’s three forwards are turning 29 this season and would be allowed to leave if a lucrative enough offer came for them.
“According to a close friend, Mbappé’s interest in English football also extends to Manchester United.”
It’s a sad indictment against the ownership of Manchester United by the Glazer family and the management of the club by Executive Vice President Ed Woodward that the idea of the Red Devils hiring one of the best players in the world now seems ridiculous.
Castles, for his part, clearly doesn’t get the joke.
Manchester United’s new star Donny van de Beek will be the 13th Dutchman to play for the senior team. But how much do you know about the other 12? Take our questionnaire below to find out.
