‘It was horrible, how else could it be?’ – Goran Ivanisevic lifts the lid on Djokovic’s field reaction to disqualification

Coach Goran Ivanisevic has revealed how Novak Djokovic reacted to his disqualification from the US Open, describing the situation as “terrible”.

Djokovic quickly fled the Billie Jean King Tennis Center after being ejected from the tournament for accidentally hitting a linesman with a replacement ball.

The aftermath has seen a torrent of criticism aimed at the world number one, but Djokovic has given some insight into how it played out from within the field.

“How can that be? Horrible,” Ivanisevic said. “He was alone for a while, and then we talked.

“It’s not easy for him, it was a huge shock that no one expected. He was the favorite, he played very well, and the previous tournament.

“I had all the scenarios in my head: that someone on the team could get infected (with Covid-19), so they kicked him out of the tournament, that he could get hurt and even lose.

“But I didn’t have this, not even in my wildest dreams, in my head.”

However, Ivanisevic believes there is a surefire way to make sure people stop talking about it.

“Novak is a natural winner and he will come out of this even stronger and better,” he said.

“If he wins Roland Garros, which I think he can, it will be forgotten as if it never happened.”
