A 40-year-old Mpumalanga man will appear in court on Monday for allegedly being involved in the robbery of railway tracks worth nearly R1.4m.

The man was an employee of a well-known scrap and waste management company in Mpumalanga, police spokesman Capt. Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi said on Sunday.

Sekgotodi said the man was expected to appear in Vosman Magistrates Court on Monday.

The arrest came after members of the Middelburg Serious Organized Crime team, the Afri Guard in Transnet and the Durban port police observed a group of suspects in Kromdraai who were loading naked railroad tracks into a truck, Sekgotodi said. .

“As they approached, the suspects fled and two were arrested at the scene. The third suspect fled using the company van. However, he crashed his escape vehicle into a wall before fleeing,” Sekgotodi said.

Third person arrested

“Despite his attempts, he was eventually arrested Saturday at his Vosman residence after the Hawks relentlessly followed up on information about his whereabouts.”

The man is the third person arrested in connection with the crime.

Thulani Rodrigo Khumalo, 33, and Dumisani David Nkosi, 38, were previously arrested.

Khumalo and Nkosi are in custody after their second brief appearance at the Vosman Magistrates Court on Friday.

They are expected to return to court Wednesday for a formal request for bail.

The latest suspect will make his first appearance in the same court on Monday, charged with damaging essential infrastructure, theft and possession of stolen property.
