Serena Williams saw her 2020 US Open dreams come to an end after losing to Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals. Although Serena reached the final of the US Open last year, she will not lose any qualifying points as the new rules take into consideration the best performance between 2019 and 2020. But the American could be threatened by other engines around her and could be kicked out the top 10.
Who will cross paths with Serena Williams after the 2020 US Open?
The main drivers in the rankings at the moment are Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka. Both have improved their performance at the 2019 US Open by reaching the final. Serena Williams is currently in eighth place with 4080 points, one position above Osaka and 19 places above Azarenka.
Calculating the point earnings of both players, Osaka currently has 4020 points. He will score another 1060 points and jump to fourth place in the standings if he loses the final against Azarenka. If Osaka wins the final, he will add 1760 points to his account and finish third. So in the next update of the WTA rankings, Serena will lose one place and go down to ninth place. Osaka will be well away from Serena Williams’ qualifying point.
Azarenka has 1832 ranking points. She will score a whopping 1290 points and jump to 14th place if she loses the final. If Azarenka wins the final, she adds another 1990 points to 11th, two places behind Serena. Azarenka could finish at 3822 ranking points, 258 points behind Serena.
As the tour moves to Europe, Serena could take back some spots. After the US Open, the Italian Open begins immediately on September 14. Serena made it to the second round last year, so a deeper run in the tournament could give her some useful points. Coming to the French Open, Serena was knocked out in the third round last year, so here again, a deeper run will give her a good point return.
