- IPID has confirmed that it is investigating the deaths of three people as a result of the police action.
- Management received a report that a police officer was involved in the incident that occurred on Saturday morning.
- Since then, the police officer has been arrested while investigations continue.
A police officer who allegedly killed three people in Phuphuma, Ngabayena area of KwaZulu-Natal, had been arrested, the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) said on Saturday.
According to spokesperson Ndileka Cola, IPID received a report alleging that an officer had been involved in the incident that occurred on Saturday morning.
He was investigating a case of deaths as a result of the police action, Cola said.

“IPID investigators responded quickly to the crime scene to conduct an investigation.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested the police officer who allegedly caused the deaths of three people,” Cola said.
He added that “IPID is gathering more valuable information related to this incident through its investigative process.”
News24 previously reported that IPID had also been investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Leroy Oliphant, 30. Oliphant died in police custody in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Oliphant, from Elsies River, was allegedly assaulted by a member of the Police Anti-Gang Unit.
His family claimed that they treated him like an animal, saying they “beat him until he died.”
Cola said the autopsy results would confirm Oliphant’s cause of death, while IPID continued its investigation.
