JOHANNESBURG – The Undoing Tax Abuse Organization (Outa) has added its voice to the growing calls for the government to account for the use of a military aircraft by a delegation from the African National Congress (ANC) in Zimbabwe.
The group, led by Secretary General Ace Magashule, was in Harare this week to speak with the ruling ZANU-PF following new reports of human rights violations in South Africa’s northern neighbor.
President Cyril Ramphosa has asked Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to explain how state resources in the form of a SANDF aircraft were used for an ANC mission to Zimbabwe.
And while Mapisa-Nqakula works on his response, which the president expects for Sunday, Outa increases the pressure.
Executive Director Wayne Duvenage said the blatant abuse of South African taxpayer and military money has raised questions about whether the trip was necessary, given the country’s need to preserve resources in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whether the trip was a success remains debatable.
Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU-PF, has made it clear that South Africa and specifically the ANC cannot interfere in its internal affairs.
