The Mpumalanga police launched a manhunt after three unknown men entered the Badplaas police station and detained two officers on duty on Saturday.

Police said the suspects stole firearms before fleeing.

The three men are alleged to have gained access by cutting through the fence at the rear of the police station.

According to a Hawks spokesperson, the incident occurred after midnight while there were five officers on duty, but only two were at the station when the suspects entered.

The spokesman said the men pointed guns at the officers and then disarmed them from their service pistols.

“The suspects forced the members to open the safe and took rifles and pistols belonging to the SAPS.”

The suspects are believed to have fled the scene on foot and had not yet been arrested.

No injuries were reported.
