CAPE TOWN – As South Africans anticipate further relaxation of lockdown regulations, University of the Witwatersrand professor Shabir Madhi said the country was in a good place to move to level 1; however, it had to be done with caution.

“We need to do it cautiously, in fact what we cannot allow to happen at the moment, as long as there is a decrease in the circulation of the virus at the moment, is to allow mass gatherings. [That is] because that could lead to over-broadcasting, which is something we want to avoid. “

Madhi, who is also in charge of the South African phase of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine trial, called for the reopening of borders and the resumption of international flights.

“There is absolutely no reason to close the borders and not allow international flights. For a country like South Africa, where the virus continues to circulate, allowing travelers to enter the country will have a nominal effect in terms of this particular outbreak. “

Speaking during a meeting with the South African Editors’ Forum this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa hinted that the country might be going lower.
