TRESemmé’s announcement was published by Clicks on its website last week.
It showed four images: two of black women’s hair described as “curly and dull” and “dry and damaged”, against two images of white woman’s hair, described as “fine and smooth” and then “normal.”
The announcement caused outrage with the EFF taking action against the health and beauty retailer. The company explained that the ad was not theirs, apologized for posting the images, and said it was an oversight on their part. They suspended the staff who placed the ad on their website.
However, the EFF did not withdraw and embarked on a protest action against Clicks, calling for it to sever all ties with Unilever. The party said the ad had racist overtones and called for those who approved it to be fired. It disrupted operations at several Clicks stores across the country. Several Clicks stores were damaged by the riots.
Clicks had to obtain a court injunction to prohibit EFF protesters from intimidating their staff and clients and also damaging their property. It suspended operations at all its outlets on Wednesday.
The EFF has also started discussions with representatives of Clicks.
