JOHANNESBURG – Eskom said its ability to supply electricity for the next 24 hours was strained after the last breakdown.

This time, a conveyor belt that fed coal to the Medupi power station broke down.

At least four generating units have been affected.

The utility company advises that it could implement stage two load reduction if the situation does not improve.

There has been an ‘on / off’ load drop since last week.

Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer explains what went wrong this time.

“When you put the two conveyors together, you splice it. One of these splices came loose and we picked up a cut on one of these 150m conveyor belts. One conveyor went off but we were still fine with the other conveyor. However, then we did. a trip on the other transporter. “

He reiterated that the entire electrical system remained fragile.

“This morning we returned a unit from Kriel power station and expected another unit from Tutuka at lunch time, but this morning we had to take one of the units to Lethabo due to a leak. So we are on a knife edge.”
