LOS ANGELES – TikTok warns parents and users about a suicide video that has been embedded in a clip.

The video showing an American taking his own life comes from a Facebook live stream and has been uploaded to various social media platforms, sometimes edited into other unrelated videos.

“We are aware that clips of a suicide that were streamed live on Facebook have recently circulated on other platforms, including TikTok,” TikTok tweeted on Monday.

The short-form video platform said its systems would automatically detect and flag clips for violating community guidelines.

“We are removing content and banning accounts that repeatedly attempt to upload clips, and we thank our community members who have reported content and warned others not to view, participate in or share such videos on any platform out of respect for the person and their loved ones. dear ones, “TikTok said.

Popular with kids and teens, TikTok suggests new videos from sources that users don’t subscribe to on its For You pages.

Kirra Pendergast, CEO of Australian cybersecurity provider Safe on Social, advised parents to keep young children off the site for the next several days until all clips had been found and removed.

“This content is being shared quite a bit, so we want to minimize the damage as much as possible,” he said on Facebook.

Pendergast said the clip was being shared on TikTok disguised as a video about kittens.
