CAPE TOWN – The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament said Wednesday it was dismayed by the Auditor General’s (AG) findings on the government’s handling of the COVID-19 aid package.
The ruling party wants to meet with cabinet ministers to discuss the matter.
The ANC in Parliament issued a statement in response to the first in a series of reports by Auditor General Kimi Makwetu, who earlier this month revealed how illegitimate companies and public servants rated the tenders.
“The ANC caucus is dismayed by these damning findings and commends the AG for exposing these malpractices, especially exposing in the GA’s words captured as ‘clear indicators of fraudulent activities’ in PPE procurement processes, as well as poor – record keeping and an inability to coordinate and supervise agencies and multi-departmental spheres, ”said the caucus.
“The report indicates that, despite checks and balances, these measures were not adequate to deter irregularities, especially in the acquisition of goods and services and, instead, there has been a price premium despite Treasury regulations. National”.
The ANC caucus led by Chief Pemmy Majodina said the AG’s first report for the period ending July 31 reflected substantial violations and non-compliance with regulations, as well as abuse of funds.
He said this was due to pre-existing deficiencies in the government’s supply chain processes, which were amplified by the introduction of emergency procurement.
The party said it was dismayed by these damning findings and commended the Attorney General for exposing the negligence.
“As a caucus we strongly condemn the actions of those who have acted in their own subjective interest and without authority, who have seen the opportunity to appropriate the resources destined to alleviate the pandemic.”
The GA’s first report dealt with R68.9 billion or about 47% of the R147.4 billion of funds spent on government COVID-19 initiatives.
The party said that individuals in government who were placed on preventive suspension would have to explain what exactly happened.
