CAPE TOWN – Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah Tutu are in good spirits after a fire damaged the living room of their home in the Overberg district township.
The fire broke out at dawn.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah Tutu thanked the staff at their Onrus retirement home, near Hermanus.
The Legacy Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation in a statement said the couple were not injured.
The Tutus praised the staff and the local fire department as “forgotten heroes, on whose courage one leans in the most difficult circumstances.”
The fire is believed to have been started by a faulty gas heater, but the exact cause is still unknown.
