According to a statement, the couple were not injured and “were in good spirits considering the events that unfolded near dawn” on Wednesday.
“Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Mrs. Leah Tutu have expressed their love and gratitude to the staff of their retirement village and members of the local fire department after a fire damaged the living area of their farmhouse in Hermanus, in the South Cape.
Tutu said: “We cannot thank the village staff enough for their kindness and swift action; or the members of the fire department, unsung heroes, on whose courage one leans in the most difficult circumstances. God bless you all.” .
The cause of the fire is unknown.
