JOHANNESBURG – Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo has spent several hours trying to understand who, between Dudu Myeni and former President Jacob Zuma, actually decided to launch an Eskom investigation and suspend the executives in 2015.
Former Eskom board chairman Zola Tsotsi has confirmed to the state capture commission that Myeni called him to attend a meeting with the president in Durban.
She went on to chair the meeting, singling out executives who would be suspended by name, and bringing in a consultant to draft the board resolution that made it possible.
Zondo reviewed Tsotsi’s testimony as he grappled with what he was told: “You are called to Durban as chairman of the Eskom board. You meet at the president’s residence. You meet with the chairman of the board of another state company. You are surprised As for what has to do with Eskom affairs, but she is here, she seems to run the show even when the president is here at the meeting. The president is listening to her, she talks most of the time … “
Zondo still doesn’t understand why Tsotsi did not object to Myeni’s role in a state entity that he was expected to lead.
“The board that is supposed to have control [of Eskom] it is a new board. They seem to be very much in favor of an idea that comes from outside, of an investigation and suspension. They run with it … Ms. Myeni, providing Mr. Linell with draft resolutions and this meeting just allows this to happen. That’s strange to me. “
Tsotsi claimed that he was surprised too, but clearly not enough to convince other board members to hold out until executives, including then-CEO Tshediso Matona, were suspended.
Tsotsi continues with her testimony today.
