  • A popular Durban butcher shop has dismissed claims that it sells zebra meat.
  • The rumor came after a social media post that showed zebra carcasses getting out of a pickup truck after a car accident.
  • Emam Bux claims that a rival competitor started the rumor and spread the post.

Popular Durban butcher shop Emam Bux Meats has denied claims that it sells zebra meat and has labeled social media posts claiming they did so as “malicious.”

“Emam Bux Meats is a household name in South Africa, supplying quality and affordable products for several years. Our meat is certified halaal and comes from fully compliant slaughterhouses,” the company said in a statement.

They said a post on social media claimed that the butcher shop sold zebra meat.

“The post is accompanied by three images, two of which are of an overturned truck bearing Hestony’s name and the other of a shipment of zebras. The images are accompanied by a message warning people that Emam Bux is selling meat from zebra”.

Someone on social media took the issue further and claimed that the upload was intended for Emam Bux.

The company distanced itself from the mail, said it was “misleading” and assured customers that it was not selling zebra meat.

“The position in question is the work of a disgruntled opponent in the meat industry who cannot compete with our affordable prices and quality meat.”

They said that while Hestony was transporting meat for them, he was also transporting meat for other companies.

“The post is malicious and designed to tarnish our good reputation in the marketplace. It doesn’t make sense because the images have been grouped together to convey a distorted view.”

The butcher added: “Emam Bux assures our customers that we do not store or sell zebra meat. All of our meat products are of the highest quality.”
