The Department of Employment and Labor has extended the Covid-19 Temporary Employee / Employer Assistance Plan (TERS) until September 15, 2020.
TERS applies to employers who are struggling and unable to pay wages due to closure. The payments are part of a government-wide response to ease the burden of the pandemic and ensure that, to the extent possible, workers are not harmed by the shutdown.
Applications are submitted by employers and then distributed directly to workers’ accounts or through their employers.
The announcement follows negotiations at the National Economic and Labor Council (NEDLAC) and the signing of a new leadership by Minister Thulas Nxesi.
“With some industry shutdowns extended through Sept. 15, it only makes sense that we continue to protect workers from the worst effects of the pandemic by extending aid payments that have put much-needed money in the hands of ordinary workers. in this country, ”Nxesi said.
Following the extension, Nxesi said that the FIU will continue to receive applications for the period March 2020 to July 2020 until September 15, 2020 and no further applications will be accepted beyond that date.
Receipt of Covid-19 TERS benefit applications for August 2020 to September 15, 2020 will close on October 30, 2020, and no further applications will be accepted beyond that date, the minister said.
“To date, the FIU has disbursed more than R41 billion in 9,501,365 payments through requests from 825,814 employers.” A directive published on Monday confirmed the extension including the new dates.
