While social media users criticize KFC for allegedly “making fun” of Tsonga people in a recent tweet, veteran actress Florence Masebe has criticized those who hide hurtful comments about other cultures behind the jokes.
The popular fast food chain topped Twitter’s trending list on Monday after posting a photo of the contestants on Family Feud SA, of which he is a sponsor, dressed in traditional clothing. The image said, “When you can’t decide on one color, then you wear them all.”
While some saw it as a fun post celebrating Heritage Month, others saw it as a dig into the Tsonga culture.
KFC responded to the backlash, deleting the tweet and apologizing for any offense caused.
“We have deleted the tweet because it was not our intention to offend anyone. We agree that it was not well thought out. While he was pretending to be funny in the back of our Family Feud SA sponsorship, we respect all cultures at Mzansi and we apologize, ”the company told its followers on Twitter.
Still, users threatened to “cancel” the company over the offensive tweet and asked others to boycott the restaurant.
This led to a fierce debate over whether people were right to be offended by the post, or should they simply “have a sense of humor.”
Florence weighed in on the debate and made it clear that she wasn’t here for anyone trying to pass off nasty remarks as jokes.
“Stop questioning people’s sense of humor when they call you about your problematic statements. Tribalism is not a joke, ”he said.
