At Zuma’s last appearance in June, defense attorney Muzi Sikhakhane told the court that the former president’s legal team was ready for the trial to begin in October, while attorney for state attorney Billy Downer had argued the trial could not scheduled for 2020 as many circumstances including a request for more details and the Covid-19 pandemic would delay procedures.
In the past, Zuma’s former defense team was accused of taking a “Stalingrad approach” by filing numerous court requests to delay the start of his corruption trial, while the state has always said it was ready to proceed.
Sikhakhane told the court that Downer was still moving the goal posts when he had testified no less than seven times since 2018, when the charges against Zuma were reinstated, that the state was ready to proceed.
However, Downer argued that the state was made to look like the “bad boy” when the defense had only requested more details on June 19.
