Johannesburg – The Department of Health, as of Sunday, reported that a cumulative total of 638,517 confirmed cases of Covid-19 had been recorded in South Africa with 1,633 new cases identified.
The total number of tests performed to date is 3,800,190 with 16,367 new tests performed since the previous report.
The Department, in a statement issued by Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize, sadly reported 110 more deaths related to Covid-19: 31 in KwaZulu-Natal, 24 in Gauteng, seven in Eastern Cape, nine in Free State. , one in the Western Cape and 38 in Mpumalanga, bringing the total number of Covid-19-related deaths to 14,889.
The Department extended its condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and thanked the healthcare workers who cared for the deceased patients.
Recoveries in the country now amount to 563,891, which translates to a recovery rate of 88 percent.
Mkhize said that the Covid-19 pandemic surge was slowing down and fewer positive cases were reported. “As we speak now, we can say that like South Africa, the increase has been left behind,” Mkhize told the National Assembly, during questions to ministers in the Social Services group.
He said that the number of positive cases was reduced from 27 to 14 percent and this has allowed the government to open the economy and move to Level 2.
The Health Minister said that even though some of the opposition parties attacked the government for implementing the blockade, it was a necessary measure to deal with the spread of the virus.
