  • Eskom is once again the center of attention of the Zondo commission.
  • A former CEO, who has separated from the power company, will appear before the commission.
  • An independent consultant for the power company will also appear.

Power utility Eskom is back in the limelight at the state capture inquiry commission on Monday.

The commission will hear evidence from former Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona and independent Eskom consultant Nicholas Linnell.

Matona “mutually separated” from Eskom in May 2015, just a few months after Eskom’s board decided to suspend the former CEO on March 12.

News24 previously reported that the board decided to suspend Matona because the Eskom administration allegedly “provided unreliable and inconsistent information to the war room, which was formed to deal with the power crisis.”

News24 further reported that Eskom expressly noted in its statement that “Eskom does not allege any misconduct or wrongdoing against Matona,” and that Matona believes that the separation agreement was in Eskom’s best interest.

Meanwhile, Fin24 previously reported that Linnell was the man selected by former Eskom chairman Zola Tsotsi to conduct an independent investigation into Eskom.

‘Shed light’

The investigation was aimed at “shedding light on the poor performance of Eskom’s generating plant, delays in the start-up of the new generating plant, high primary energy costs and cash flow challenges.”

The board, however, decided to part ways with Linnell in April 2015 because it believed Tsotsi did not follow the correct procedures in selecting Linnell.

Former President Jacob Zuma had allegedly instructed Tsotsi to implement the investigation and use Linnell as his boss, according to a Business Day report.

Tsotsi then resigned as chairman of the Eskom board in March 2015.
