JOHANNESBURG – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) used Twitter on Sunday to mobilize their members to forcibly close all Clicks stores across the country in a tweet as the store will not voluntarily close.

“If Clicks does not close, our members in all branches will close the 880 Clicks points of sale throughout the country from Monday, September 7, 2020 to Friday, September 11, 2020,” the EFF said in a statement.

The health and beauty retailer drew the ire of South Africans over the images on its website, which most viewed as biased against natural black hair.

Clicks then issued a public apology after the images sparked outrage on social media. “We would like to issue an unequivocal apology. We have removed images that go against everything we believe in. We do not tolerate racism and we are strong advocates of natural hair. We are deeply sorry and will enforce stricter measures on our website, ”says the apology on the Clicks Twitter thread.

While the EFF’s move to forcibly close Clicks stores was largely supported, it has sparked mixed reactions: Some say the EFF is playing judge and jury on Clicks’ hair ad and others say their demands are scandalous.

The EFF demanded:

  • That Clicks Publicly list the names of all Clicks directors and employees who participated in the commissioning of said advertisement.
  • That all the people who were involved in the commissioning of the advertisement in question, whether they are Clicks employees or independent contractors, be fired with immediate effect.
  • Publicly list the name of the service providers or contractors who commissioned the advertisement in question.
  • Publicly list the names of all the directors of the company that commissioned the ad.
  • That the contracted company that commissioned the advertisement must terminate its contract with immediate effect.

One Tweep expressed concern for Clicks workers. “What about our brothers and sisters who work there? They must lose their salary for a day for something that can be solved without attacking the stores, ”he said.
