Johannesburg-born mentor has been promoted by Metro as they seek to qualify for the play-offs
South African coach Bradley Carnell has temporarily taken over Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York Red Bulls.
The 43-year-old strategist has served as an assistant coach under American mentor Chris Armas since March 2017.
However, Armas was fired by the Red Bulls on Friday due to poor results and the team won just one of its last six league games.
The club dubbed Metro also announced that an interim head coach would be appointed in due course after they split from CJ Brown, who was serving as Armas’ second assistant.
Since then, Metro has revealed that Carnell will serve as interim coach.
“Bradley Carnell has been named interim head coach by the New York Red Bulls.”
“Carnell, a former South African international, was appointed assistant coach on March 28, 2017,” read a statement from the club.
Red Bulls also revealed that former international Bafana Bafana will be in charge of the team when they host the Philadelphia Union on Sunday morning.
“Carnell’s first game as interim head coach will be Sunday, September 6. [Monday, September 7 at 01h00 SA Time] against the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena, “read another statement.
Carnell previously served as an assistant coach for the Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
The retired left-back coached the University of Johannesburg men’s team in the Varsity Football League.
Carnell hopes to improve Red Bulls’ results and guide them to the 2020 MLS Play-offs.
Metro is currently eighth in the Eastern Conference standings after having recorded three wins, two draws and four losses in nine games.
