- Hundreds of people were displaced after a fire in Imizamo Yethu.
- The Hout Bay neighborhood councilor estimates that 800 people have been affected.
- The fire has been extinguished and no fatalities or injuries have been reported.
A fire in Imizamo Yethu destroyed approximately 200 structures, affecting approximately 800 people, authorities said.
“Fortunately I can report that according to the Fire Department, which has been at the scene since last night, there are no known or reported injuries or deaths, and they have not received any patients seeking assistance due to the fire,” said the district councilor of Hout Bay. Roberto Miguel Quintas said in a statement Sunday.
This comes after the City Fire and Rescue Service responded shortly after 02:00 to the burning informal structures on Molokoane Street.
“Hout Bay firefighters responded but requested more resources as the swirling wind was causing havoc. Firefighters from 14 different fire stations, with a total of 20 firefighting devices and approximately 80 staff members, battled the blaze.” Said City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Jermaine Carelse said.

The fire was subsequently extinguished at 11:48 a.m. Sunday and a firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
Homeless
Hundreds have been made homeless and, as a result, 15 members of the Informal Settlement Management staff have been sent to the area.
“Disaster Risk Management (DRM) has already involved Sassa and is still awaiting his response.
“DRM has also started reaching out to corporate sponsors to help with the necessary items.
“I appreciate the prompt response of the services, and more than it seems that no one has suffered injuries or especially death,” added Quintas.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, firefighters responded to a lit informal structure on Ceba Street, Makhaza, at 10:22 a.m.
“Three people escaped the fire and three unrecognizable burned bodies were found. The scene was turned over to the South African Police Service,” Carelse said.
