The body of a Texas woman caught fire after she applied “non-brand” hand sanitizer before lighting a candle in her home on Sunday, KHOU reported.

Kate Wise, a mother of three, is in an intensive care unit at a local hospital in Austin, according to a GoFundMe created by her best friend, Kathryn Bonesteel. The fundraiser, who is seeking donations to help with Wise’s medical costs and recover from fire damage, said Wise was preparing to watch a movie with her children before putting on the hand sanitizer.

Wise then lit a candle, causing her hand to catch fire, KHOU reported. The flames “made contact” with his hand sanitizer and “exploded” and his face, as well as his body, burst into flames in seconds, he told the outlet.

“Because of the hand sanitizer, it lit up everything … everywhere,” Wise said. “I had hand sanitizer on my hand, it just lit my hand on fire.”

According to KHOU, two of his daughters went to their neighbor’s house to call the authorities. While it was still swollen, Wise was able to get her disabled daughter and pets out of her home, the outlet reported.

A local fire department is investigating how the fire started.

According to PEOPLE, a department spokesman said 18% of Wise’s body burned as a result of the fire.

“What appears to have happened is that he used hand sanitizer and then went to light a candle, and the hand sanitizer is flammable,” the spokesperson said.

Wise told KHOU that it “kills her” that her children witnessed the incident.

“Like you’re on fire so I think that part killed me just because it’s something I never wanted them to go through,” he said.

According to GoFundMe, Wise wants to highlight her story to warn others about the dangers of some of the protective products bought in stores to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“Covid-19 has brought many unsafe products to our shelves. Many of which have not been properly tested and are not safe. Be careful what you put in your body. Make sure what you are using is FDA approved.” , the fundraising page said.

The Food and Drug Administration has been updating a list of dangerous hand sanitizers that consumers should avoid when purchasing products to keep them safe from Covid-19.
