Durban – Fists flew, insults were thrown, egos were hurt and hearts were broken when ex-con Jub Jub and the crew of the 9/9 Uyajola visited Newlands West, Durban, on their season finale last Sunday.
Moja Love’s show, a DStv channel, is a spinoff of the American reality show Cheaters.
Uyajola 9/9 helps disgruntled lovers, who suspect that their peers are cheating on them by investigating and then confronting the suspects who are always caught red-handed.
Last weekend’s episode featured a woman who hadn’t seen her partner in 18 months. She had contacted the program and their investigations led them to Newlands West. It turned out that the man was in a relationship with another woman for over four months and when his new lover discovered that she was not the only one, all hell broke loose.
Jrey Fisher, a relative of the man’s new partner, said they were at a friend’s party when suddenly a group of men sneaked in the door with cameras.
“We were relaxing and having a good time and suddenly we heard this commotion. We were in shock and I can’t tell you how many people were there because everything happened so fast, ”he said. “We saw the girlfriend attack my cousin and then he fell.”
Fisher said that when her cousin decided to walk away from the drama, it became their fight because they always supported each other. She said things got out of hand, many things could have been avoided.
“But at least my hair looked good,” he said. “We weren’t even thinking, but it would change the way he handled things.”
Since the show’s premiere in May last year, skeptics have been accusing producers of paying actors and organizing events to get ratings. However, Fisher said that everything viewers saw was a true reflection of what happened.
The show has also come under fire for exploiting blacks’ pain over ratings and casting an ex-con as its main host.
Jub Jub and his friend Themba Shabalala were convicted of manslaughter for killing four students during a drag racing accident in 2010. Both were initially given 20 years, but then the sentences were reduced to 10.
Jub Jub was released on parole in 2017.
Bokani Moyo, director of Moja Love, said they are an equal opportunity employer and that Jub Jub originally joined as the host of Uthando Noxolo, a show about redemption and forgiveness.
“There can be no rehabilitation without redemption and forgiveness. Jub Jub showed his willingness to do the hard work.
“Then we chose him with several other candidates to be the hosts for the first season of Uyajola 9/9. Fits the requirements for the role.
“He received a positive response in the first season, so we decided to use him as the main presenter for the second season,” said Moyo.
He said the response and public support for the program had been overwhelming.
The show is on hiatus from production, but viewers can catch Jub Jub on a new reality show, You Promised to Marry Me, which begins tonight at 9pm.
