Bradley Carnell, titular defender of the Bafana Bafana team for the 2002 World Cup, was appointed interim coach of the New York Red Bulls Saturday by the Major League Soccer club.

Carnell replaces former US midfielder Chris Armas, who was fired on Friday after the team suffered four losses and a draw in six games, being outscored 7-3 in the span with no more than one goal in any game.

The 43-year-old from Johannesburg had been an assistant to the US team since March 2017 after being an assistant coach for the Orlando Pirates in the South African Premiership.

Carnell played 229 games for German clubs between 1998 and 2010, including stints in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Karlsruher.

His first game in charge of New York will be on Sunday when the Red Bulls host Philadelphia.

The Red Bulls are holding on to a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs at 3-4 with two tied for 11 points.
