Among those who paid tribute to him were retired politician Mac Maharaj, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and his daughter Rosa.

“Vejay loved life. He had a lust for life. He had a cheeky streak, ”Maharaj said.

Maharaj paid tribute to the three sons of Ramlakan and his wife Sandra, also a veteran of the struggle.

“I do not agree that the sufferings we endure in the struggle should be seen as a sacrifice.

“We made our decisions without taking into account the price our loved ones had to pay. They are the ones who made the sacrifices. In that spirit I want to acknowledge the three sons of Vejay …

“You are children of the revolution. May you always walk upright. “

Mkhize described Ramlakan as a “humble servant of the people” and a “brave soldier”.

He also praised Ramlakan’s dedication and contribution to the liberation struggle.

“Upon his passing, let us remind all those in positions of power that the struggle cannot end until we strengthen good governance, eliminate corruption, achieve true non-racism and non-sexism …

“This is what he dedicated his life to.”

Defense Minister Mapisa-Nqakula told mourners that she had not yet read Ramlakan’s book “which speaks a lot about him as Tata Madiba’s doctor.”

He said Ramlakan “had a very special relationship with Madiba”, describing it as “extraordinary”.

Mapisa-Nqakula recalled how “tears were running down Vejay’s face” when Mandela died.

“Vejay was so attached to him.”

She said he was “brave and eloquent” and that he was committed to improving military health while serving.

Ramlakan was cremated at the Clare Estate crematorium.
