South vs North player rankings

The island rivalry increased again for the third time in 33 years with the North-South party in Wellington.

The South chose a Crusaders-flavored starting XV and it paid dividends as they played coherently and stayed in the game even with limited possession early on.

North came to the front midway through the second half, but South had the last word to win 38-35. Here are the qualifications of the South team.

Barrett and McKenzie discuss tactics ahead of North vs. South clash

1. Joe Moody – 6.5

However, a nice covering tackle on Beauden Barrett while he was doing damage. Solid scrum time, but gave up a couple of penalties. Off at 50.

2. Codie Taylor – 7

Unfairly stolen from a try with an obstruction call at the maul time in 23 minutes. Set up Jordie Barrett’s attempt with a smart pass. Off at 50.

3. Nephew Laulala – 7

Good running back reflexes to pinch on the first try. Solid scrum against dangerous Big Karl and good hands late in the first half. Off at 50

4. Samuel Whitelock – 7

He threw Dunshea into the air for most of the first half. Good rotation in ’74 after a sustained attack from the North to show he still has energy.

5. Mitchell Dunshea – 7.5

He took advantage of his opportunity in an international company. Good counterfeit on the two-handed line kick to earn penalty. Good snuff from Ioane’s attack at 20. She spent a lot of time in open play pulling up her shorts, someone must have sabotaged her elastic. Off 67

6. Shannon Frizell – 7

Always a handful with ball in hand. Hit hard, as Tuungafasi discovered after age 44.

7. Tom Christie – 7.5

He really looked at home on defense and a good job on the ball. Big turnovers after 42 and 56 at Reece and Barrett. Off at 60.

8. Tom Sanders – 8

He must have been close to Man of the Match with strong carrying and tackling measures. Big scrum uproar in the 25th minute and then 5 minutes later a good bet down the line on an attack that led to Jordie Barrett’s try.

9. Brad Weber – 7

He played well above the form he had shown so far this season and made a good bet to retain third place AB 9. Off at 63.

10. Richie Mo’unga – 6

It didn’t look 100%, especially after his 28 minute HIA test. Connected well but we didn’t see the glare dazzle with ball in hand.

11. George’s Bridge – 7

Some good flurries on the left flank, even a lineout have it under his belt. He is always dangerous and you would think he will be the first winger chosen on the All Black team.

12. Jack Goodhue – 7

He seemed a little tentative at first, but he was right up there with Sanders on carries and tackles. Good glue.

13. Braydon Ennor – N / A

At 13 with a nasty knee problem.

14. Will Jordan – 8

He has the uncanny ability to turn chances into meters won and points. Great coverage tackle on Reece late in the first half. In the second half he really started to shine; Nice jump on the bouncing ball to get a 5 points at 59. And then the last try … Oh, what a brilliant skill!

15. Jordie Barrett – 7.5

He used his booming boot well in the swirling wind. Great coordination with Mo’unga for the snatch and the chase and then the brute force to move on to try in the corner. He also crushed Savea with a menacing tackle in the 53rd minute and always at the forefront by raising the ball.

Replacements:

16. Liam Coltman – 6

On at 50 and pill lineout became a real problem in its presentation. Admittedly, he managed to hit the latter.

17. George Bower – 6

At 50 and played his role well

18. Tyrel Lomax – 7

At 50 and it looked like his father and former Kiwi star John were going to burst into a ball in midfield to try.

19. Manaaki Selby-Rickit – 7.5

At 67. This guy looks like a real athlete and if he can complete it, he has a promising future. A good ball on the starting line and an incredible romp in open play.

20. Dillon Hunt – 7

He fired up at 60 and played with fiery intensity.

21. Finlay Christie – 7

At 63, he approached his heart with his usual energy. The best tackles in less than half the field.

22. Josh Ioane – 7

He entered at 28 minutes with Mo’unga’s HIA and played the rest of the first half. He came back at 71 and threw a perfect cross kick for Jordan to win the game.

23. Leicester Development – 6.5

In the 13th minute in position 13 and he certainly did not disappoint his team. A couple of good strong runs and he seemed reasonably confident on defense against some talented opponents.
