A 76-year-old man who was kidnapped and held hostage overnight while his attackers emptied his bank accounts at various gas station ATMs was rescued at Phillip Nel Park in Pretoria, police said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday.
The Hawks, Tshwane Subway Police, the K9 unit and Tracker Connect had joined the investigation.
“They took strategic positions and identified a suspicious Hyundai i20 hatchback entering a local gas station with two occupants. The two suspects then got out of the vehicle, went to the ATM where they took money in various transactions and left, ”police said.
“The vehicle was followed and the members managed to stop it. They arrested the two suspects who were found in possession of the victim’s bank card and other valuables ”.
The gang had left their third accomplice in place to watch over the old man.
The two gave police an address where the victim was held hostage.
“The identified facilities were accessed where one more suspect from the facilities was detained. The shocked but unharmed victim was rescued and his vehicle was also recovered from the scene, ”said police.
It was not immediately clear how or why the old man had been attacked.
The trio are scheduled to appear in Pretoria magistrates court soon.
They face charges of kidnapping, extortion and possession of stolen property.
“The vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime has been seized, as well as cash, cell phones and bank cards of the victims for further investigation,” the police added.
