The ANC’s financial troubles have resurfaced once again, and ordinary staff members are bearing the brunt once again.
The ruling party was unable to pay its salary bill for the month of August, even though it was scheduled to pay staff their salaries on August 25.
The fact that the ruling party does not pay its staff their salaries is nothing new. The party faced a similar problem in December 2019 and again in June 2020 when it alerted staff that it would not be able to meet its obligation to pay wages on the 25th of those months.
In a letter to party members from Secretary General Ace Magashule, the party said it would not be able to pay the salaries of its hundreds of workers across the country, in a replay of the December 2019 scenario when the party failed to pay. the salaries of its staff following a decrease in donor funding.
The letter, dated September 3, 2020, read: “Please note that the above-mentioned employee will not be able to meet monthly installments on time this month due to a delay in salary, payments are pending until further notice.” .
Six months after the December pay debacle, in which staff salaries were only paid after Christmas, party employees took another blow when told they would not receive their June salaries on the 25th of that month.
At the time, the party general treasurer, Paul Mashatile, informed the staff that their salaries would be paid five days later, however, the party’s general manager, Febe Potgieter, informed the party staff that their salaries would only be paid on the 6th. of July.
Rumors resurfaced on Tuesday about the party’s inability to pay the salaries of its staff in August, yet party leaders did not communicate about the reasons why it could not fulfill its obligation to its workers.
When contacted for comment, party leaders, including Magashule, his deputy Jessie Duarte and party spokesman Pule Mabe, did not respond to questions about why the party had not paid its staff.
When contacted to comment on the latest salary issue, Potgieter declined to comment, saying the salaries were only discussed by the party with its staff and not with the media.
