  • The truck carrying alcohol worth 1.5 million rand was hijacked by four men in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
  • The suspects remained at large, while the truck, the driver and his crew were unharmed.

Swift action by the police led to the recovery of stolen alcohol worth an estimated 1.4 million rand, two hours after the liquor truck he was in was hijacked.

The recovery came after the liquor truck was hijacked in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Police spokesman Col. Priscilla Naidu said the hijacked truck was also recovered.

Most of the stolen liquor was recovered from a warehouse on Marine Drive near Schoenmakerskop.

About R100,000 was lacking in alcohol.

“It is alleged that on Thursday, around 07:00, a truck loaded with liquor worth more than R1.5 million was heading to deliver liquor to retailers when the 44-year-old driver and his crew were abducted by four males along Grahamstown Road in Port Elizabeth.

“The suspects got out of a blue VW Polo and approached the truck, which had to slow down because the VW Polo was driving very slowly in front of it. Two suspects got into the truck and forced the driver and his crew to stop.

“The truck was driven to Paterson Road and then to an unknown location where the liquor was dumped,” Naidu said.

Naidu said the truck driver and his equipment were dropped off along Victoria Drive in Walmer.

“The driver’s two mobile phones were also taken during the abduction. At approximately 09:45, members of the Port Elizabeth K9 unit recovered the truck and the victims. After further investigation, around 11: 00, members of the K9 unit assisted by a tracking company recovered the stolen liquor material from a warehouse on Marine Drive near Schoenmakerskop.

“Some of the liquor has already been removed from the warehouse. Around 652 sealed cases of various types of liquor and 46 loose bottles were recovered, as well as three pressure truck jacks. The total value of the alcohol recovered is approximately R1.4 million, Naidu said.

Members of the Eastern Cape organized crime unit were investigating a truck hijacking case.
