The head of the Mpumalanga human settlements department, Kebone Masange, appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges related to immigration.

Masange faces charges of fraud, possession of fraudulent documents and violation of Immigration Law, said Lumka Mahanjana, a spokesman for the regional National Tax Authority (NPA).

Immigration officials arrested Masange Tuesday for allegedly being in the country illegally and for using fraudulent documents, he said.

“This earned him a prominent position in the Department of Human Settlements in Mpumalanga for the past three years,” Mahanjana said.

According to City Press, Masange was allegedly not screened prior to being employed about five years ago.

He is from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe.

He is expected to return to court on September 11.
