JOHANNESBURG – Former Gauteng Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Moodey held an explosive press conference Wednesday in which he announced his resignation from the official opposition.

Moodey had served as the party leader in Gauteng since 2012.

He joins former party leader Mmusi Maimane and former Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba on the list of people who have left the DA in recent times.

702Mandy Wiener in The noon report spoke with Moodey, the head of the Gauteng provincial legislature, Mike Moriarty and political analyst Ongama Mtimka to comment on the matter.

“Every time I was running for a spot in the game, there was this sniper against my character and frivolous disciplinary charges brought against me to tarnish my reputation and my character,” Moodey said.

“There is a clear indication from those in the party and leadership to purge those who had supported Mmusi Maimane, Athol Trollip and Herman Mashaba when they left.”

He said the accusations brought against him are frivolous, baseless and fabricated.

Moriarty said that Moodey was misinterpreting the signals and, although he has his own problems within the DA, the fact is that the party is the largest opposition party.

ZILLE’S STATEMENTS ON ‘HOLID AND DELIBERATELY PROVOCATIVE’ BLAK PEOPLE

Moodey has taken a hit on the character of Hellen Zille, saying that her statements on colonization, the black life matter movement and apartheid show that she is ignorant, tone deaf, or both.

“Helen’s tweet about black people living in a state of perpetual victimization is very insensitive. It is hurtful and deliberately provocative. I am deeply saddened, uncomfortable and I am no longer at home.

She said it is a tragedy that the current leadership continues to blindly follow her and dance to her tune.

“The fact that the party is silent when it makes such pronouncements shows that it supports their opinion. Unfortunately, and after much soul searching, I have reached a point where I cannot defend these insensitive statements and statements. “

Moodey said that the party’s silence on Zille’s views was shocking, and that he cannot be left alone to earn a salary.
